Dried Trees?

I got fascinated by these trees all around ANU. Its winter here, so a lot of trees have no leaves.
The lowest temp recorded from the time i arrived was 4 degrees centigrade. Prior to my arrival temp dropped to as low as -1 degrees centigrade, according to the locals. M up to colder days and nights i suppose, i.e. occassionally there is snow in Canberra at winter time.
